Cross country: Glacier, Bigfork's Morley shine in Cut Bank

CUT BANK — Bigfork’s Makena Morley ran away from the girls pack and the Glacier teams dominated at the Mike Reynolds Cross Country Time Trials on Friday.

Morley, who didn’t run the course last year, finished in 17 minutes, 20 seconds to win the girls race by more than two minutes, dodging some extreme weather that kicked in at the tail end of the run.

Hailstorms and lightning swept through the area minutes after the race was completed, leaving a few runners to slog through the preceding rain. For a wet course, times were on par with what should be expected at the beginning of the season.

Glacier’s Bailey Smith (19:37) and Corinne Hamilton (19:56) finished in second and third, respectively. They led a pack of Glacier runners that all finished in the top 10. Mercede Erickson (20:31) finished in seventh and Jessica Chery (20:44) and Miranda Champion (20:58) were ninth and 10th, respectively.

Columbia Falls’ Samantha Mundel finished fourth in 20:04. Polson had four runners in the top 15, led by Claudia Hewston in sixth at 20:22.

Flathead’s Mackenzie Bauma finished 11th at 21:00 to lead the Bravettes.

Glacier’s boys went 1-2 in the other race, with Kade McCutcheon edging teammate Logan Harmon at the line to win it. McCutcheon finished in 16:26.08 to Harmon’s 16:26.39.

Like the girls, the Wolfpack runners all finished near the front, taking five of the top eight spots. Roben Castren finished fifth in 16:42, Nathan Connell finished seventh in 17:01 and Noah Hill finished eighth in 17:05.

“It was our best meet ever so far,” Glacier coach Mike McLean said. “We’re really happy and are gonna keep working hard.”

Bigfork’s Logan Morley finished third, 12 seconds behind the leaders in 16:38. Polson’s Tel Motichka finished 11th in 17:30.

Flathead’s Sylas Schutt finished sixth, 16:53. Flathead teammates Chance Kittle (ninth, 17:15), Jordan Engel (12th, 17:40) and Jacob Callas (14th 17:54) also finished in the top 15.
