Museum needs money to fix elevator

| September 11, 2013 5:00 PM

The Hockaday Museum of Art needs help fixing its elevator.

On Aug. 21, the museum’s only elevator stopped functioning. The Hockaday’s bookkeeper was trapped inside for nearly an hour.

Following rescue efforts, the elevator's hydraulic system and electrical components completely failed.

An estimate of $10,000 has been given to restore the hydraulic system, while an additional $5,000 is needed to fix the supporting electrical system and complete the repair.

While the museum is working  to find emergency grants to cover the repair costs, the potentially available amounts fall short of what is needed.

“Your contribution will help the museum restore elevator function much more quickly, restoring access to persons with disabilities,” the Hockaday wrote in its weekly newsletter.

“The museum has many visitors during Senior Tour and Tea Day each month from area independent and assisted-living homes, and the elevator is essential for them to be able to see the main exhibition floors of the museum. The museum also hosts frequent school tours, which may include individuals with various special needs.”
