ANACONDA — Glacier’s Cody Sherrill and Scott Larson led the Wolfpack boys to within three strokes of the lead at the Butte/Anaconda Invitational golf tournament on Thursday at Old Works Golf Club.

Sherrill is in a tie for second after the first round of the two-day tournament, shooting a 2-over-par round of 74 to close within three strokes of Bozeman’s Kyle Powell. Sentinel’s Logan Becker also shot 74 to tie for second while Larson was one stroke back in fourth place.

All four of Glacier’s scoring golfers are in the top 20, with Sam Stern registering a 79 in a tie for 10th and Kevin Talcott an 81 in a tie for 17th. Their team score of 309 trails only Bozeman, which carded a 306.

Whitefish’s boys closed the day tied for seventh as a team with 344, staying even with Dillon as the second-best team in Class A behind the host Copperheads. Whitefish’s Art Doorn is tied for the lowest round in his class, shooting 76 to tie for fifth.

The Whitefish girls are keeping pace with the top of Class AA, sitting in third as a team. The Bulldogs’ Erin Tabish is tied for sixth with a first-round 84. All four scoring girls placed in the top 20, with Georgia Donaldson shooting a 96 in 14th, Simone Craft a 98 in a tie for 16th and Katie Fyall a 99 in 18th.
