Golf: Whitefish's Dorn, Glacier's Avery 2nd at Butte/Anaconda Invitational
BUTTE — Whitefish’s Art Doorn shot a tournament-low 2-under-par 70 on Friday at the Butte Country Club to finish second and one shot behind medalist Kyle Powell of Bozeman at the Butte/Anaconda Invitational golf tournament.
Doorn entered the day tied for fifth, five shots back of the leader, but was able to take advantage of a tough course and vault up the leaderboard. His day also lifted Whitefish to a fifth-place showing as a team, the top squad in Class A at the event.
Glacier finished second as a team, scoring 618 to fall seven strokes back of first-place Bozeman. Scott Larson placed third individually, shooting 74 on Friday to wind up 5-over-par at 149 to lead the Wolfpack. All four scoring Wolfpack golfers placed in the top 20, as Cody Sherrill and Sam Stern each shot 155 to tie for 11th and Kevin Talcott shot 159 to tie for 17th.
Glacier’s Teigan Avery nearly overtook four other golfers to win the girls side of the tournament, shooting a 2-over-par 74 on Friday to finish in second place, one stroke back of Butte’s Hailey Hoagland. Avery’s round was the lowest in the two-day event, cutting her total to 155. Glacier finished in fifth place as a team, well behind meet winner Butte.
The Whitefish girls were phenomenal, finishing third as a team, easily the best Class A squad of the week. All five golfers wound up in the top 20, led by Erin Tabish, who shot an 82 on Friday to finish at 166 in sixth place. Katie Fyall shot a 188 to place 13th, Simone Craft and Georgia Donaldson each shot 194 to tie for 17th and Malia Morris was 20th with a 199.
