Soccer roundup: Whitefish trips Bigfork; Halliburton lifts Glacier

BIGFORK — Whitefish just had too many weapons for Bigfork to contend with.

Four different players scored goals in a 6-1 Northern A soccer victory for the Whitefish girls.

Haley Nicholson scored twice in the first 18 minutes and Anna Peterson found the net at 13 and 42 minutes.

Nicholson, who has scored in all six WHS matches to date, assisted on Peterson’s first score.

Jess Baldonado and Becca Holdhusen had the other Bulldog goals.

Megan Pancoast scored for Bigfork at the 26-minute mark.

Caroline Carbo assisted on two Whitefish scores.

“We’re still improving every game,” Whitefish coach Wendy Farrens said.

“Our whole team tactics are getting better and better.”

Whitefish (5-1 overall, 3-0 league) plays at Polson on Tuesday while Bigfork travels to Libby.

MISSOULA — Kendall Halliburton connected at the 70-minute mark to give Glacier a tight Western AA victory over Missoula Big Sky.

Big Sky outshot Glacier 13-6 on goal.

Amy Braig had 12 keeper saves for Glacier.

“We were lucky to get out of there with a win,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said. “I have to commend the girls for fighting through it. We have injuries, players who are sick. Excuses aside, Big Sky is an amazing team.”

Glacier (4-2) plays at Missoula Sentinel on Thursday.

WHITEFISH — Jared Johnson tallied four goals in Whitefish’s Northwestern A victory.

Kyle Thomson scored Bigfork’s lone goal in the 36th minute to make it 2-1 but Whitefish pulled away with three goals in the second half.

“To be honest I think that for three-fourths of the game Bigfork played very well and really frustrated Whitefish,” Bigfork coach Bill Buxton said. “The last 15 minutes or so I think fatigue set in and we weren’t very sharp. The first 60 minutes it seemed like we were one lucky break away from tying it up or at least closing the gap. I’m really proud of the boys.”

Nathan Boone scored Whitefish’s other goal and Taven Edland and Tommy Murphy each had two assists.

Bigfork (2-3-2 overall, 2-1-1 Northwestern A) travels to Libby on Tuesday. Whitefish (5-0-1, 2-0-1) plays at Polson on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM, Idaho — Joe King scored in the 79th minute to finally get Stillwater Christian on the scoreboard in a loss to Lakeland High School in a nonconference matchup.

Stillwater drops to 4-2 on the season.

“We hung in there during the first half, but were outplayed during the second half,” Stilwater coach Tim Anderson said.

“Lakeland moved the ball well through the middle of the field and provided solid support from their defenders.”

Stillwater hosts Frenchtown on Thursday at 4 p.m.
