Sun Road work to affect east-side trail access

Fall access to Glacier National Park hiking trails from Going-to-the-Sun Road east of Logan Pass will be limited after Sunday, when the road east of the pass will be closed for the fall to allow for construction work.

Starting Monday, vehicle traffic on the east side will be restricted near St. Mary Campground. That means Sunday is the last day to reach Logan Pass and other areas from the east side.

Trails affected by the closure include Siyeh Pass, Piegan Pass, Otokomi, St. Mary Falls/Baring Falls/Virginia Falls, Gunsight, Sperry and Red Eagle.

Access to some backcountry campsites on the east side of the park also will be affected. Backcountry campers are required to have permits that must be obtained from the Apgar Permit Center at this time of year.

Park visitors are encouraged to bring their own drinking water because drinking water availability throughout the park will be limited during the fall.

Drinking water is not available at Logan Pass, for instance, but restroom facilities will be. The pass will continue to be accessible from the park’s west entrance until Oct. 20, weather permitting.

Anybody planning to hike east-side trails that are accessed off Sun Road are encouraged to contact the park at 888-7800 or visit the park website, www.nps.gov/glac.
