Soccer roundup: Whitefish boys stay unbeaten

POLSON — A pair of goals each from Nathan Boone and Hunter Lamoureux led Whitefish to a decisive 6-0 Northern A conference soccer victory over Polson on Tuesday.

Boone opened up the scoring in the 33rd minute on an assist from Jared Johnson. He scored again after halftime. Minutes after each of Boone’s goals, Lamoureux tallied scores of his own, in the 39th and 65th minutes respectively.

Scott Marsh and Shanoah Montano added insurance goals for the Bulldogs.

Hellgate 6, Flathead 1

Hellgate got a pair of goals from Kyle Higgins in the first half and three goals in five minutes after halftime to distance itself from Flathead in a Western AA conference game.

Higgins completed a hat trick in the 52nd minute to give the Knights a 4-0 lead. Yacir Allen also added two goals for Hellgate.

Will Cronk scored unassisted in the 57th minute for the Braves’ only tally of the day.

“Believe it or not, if you ignore the score we played pretty decent,” Flathead coach Dan Ferguson said.

“We knew going in it was going to be a game of defensive pressure. We did a good job of our game plan. They scored a couple quick goals in the second half and we were playing catch-up after that.”

LIBBY — Two first-half goals from Johnny Davidson were enough for Libby to hold off Bigfork in a Northern A conference match.

Davidson scored in the 22nd and 29th minutes to give the Loggers a 2-0 lead. Tyler Zavala got a goal back for Bigfork five minutes later but neither team could capitalize after that.

Two late goals from the Flathead girls weren’t enough to catch up to Hellgate as the Bravettes dropped a Western AA conference game.

Trailing 3-0, Jacquelyn Merrill and Stephanie Wilson scored unassisted as the seconds wound down in the game to get Flathead closer. They couldn’t get the last goal in the final two minutes, falling short to the Knights.

“We came out and played pretty decent the first few minutes,” Flathead coach Cory Wilson said.

“Hellgate dictated a majority of the first half. We never found much of a rhythm. We started to connect a little more in the second half but we made far too many mistakes.”

POLSON — Whitefish scored three first-half goals to distance itself from Polson in a Northern A conference victory.

Jess Baldonado scored in the eighth minute to give the Bulldogs the early advantage but a goal from Polson’s Tessa Nunlist evened the game just three minutes later. Anna Peterson gave Whitefish the lead for good in the 17th and Grace Kurtz added the eventual game winner in the 39th to keep the Bulldogs undefeated in conference.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Whitefish coach Wendy Farrens said. “Polson came out playing pretty well but we were able to put a couple in the net. I like the way our team is coming together.”
