Dogs take team, individual titles at NWA golf tourney
WHITEFISH — Both the Whitefish boys and girls took advantage of their home course, attacking the South Course at Whitefish Lake Golf Club on Thursday to take away the Northwestern A divisional title. Bulldogs seniors Art Doorn and Erin Tabish won the individual titles.
“The kids are pretty excited,” Whitefish coach Tim Olson said. “We’re peaking at the right time.”
The golfers did their best to adjust to a challenging course, with the greens playing fast on a cold, windy day.
Doorn, a three-time divisional champ, shot a 3-over-par 74 to win the tournament by eight strokes over Frenchtown’s Troy Wolff.
“Art has played great all year,” Olson said. “He made a swing change early in the year and took a while to get going, but things are clicking right now. He’s going to be tough to beat at the state tournament.”
Whitefish’s Mitch Young and Joey Walp finished in third and fourth places, carding rounds of 83 and 84, respectively. Cooper Donahue finished ninth, shooting an 86 and Cody Olson finished 11th with a 92. This is the second straight divisional title for the Bulldogs.
Libby’s Morgan Wilkins finished sixth with an 84 to lead the Loggers with teammate Jonny Cielak finishing one stroke back in seventh place. Alex Killian led Polson with an eighth place round of 85 and Henry Chisholm led Columbia Falls with a 13th place 97.
The top 15 golfers and top two teams advance to next week’s state tournament in Polson.
The Polson ladies nearly put together a third straight divisional title, falling to Whitefish in the team score by three strokes.
Erin Tabish, herself a three-time divisional champion, shot an 84 to beat Polson’s Peyton Anderson by five strokes. The Pirates’ Jaylin Kenney finished third with a 90.
Whitefish won the title on its depth, with Malia Morris finishing fifth shooting 96, Georgia Donaldson seventh with a 99 and Katie Fyall finishing eighth with a 101. Simone Craft also qualified for state, finishing 11th with a 114.
Polson’s Nicole Fairmont finished sixth with a 96 and Lauren Dupuis finished 10th with a 108. Libby’s Erin Jager and Lily Feeback also qualified for state.
“(Polson’s) a great program,” Olson said. “They’ve won the last two state championships and they’re the team to beat still.”
