Ryan Keenan of Flathead along with Glacier’s Cody Sherrill and Teigan Avery capped off the regular season Friday afternoon with impressive performances on the final day of the Flatfish Invitational at Village Greens Golf Course.

Keenan, a sophomore, matched the course record with his 7-under 63 from the white tees. His round featured six birdies on the back nine en route to a 29 and two birdies on the front nine for a 34.

His lone bogey came on the par 4 sixth hole.

Other than that, his game was right on.

“From about 60 yards in, I hit everything to within 10 feet,” he said.

“I didn’t miss a putt from there. There wasn’t anything further than 15 feet (from the hole) on the front nine.”

Rick Donahue and Ryan Malby set the course record back in 1995 with their 63s.

“That was pretty cool to see,” Flathead coach Jess Roper said.

“That should give him some confidence going into state.”

The boys started play on the back side, which Roper said is the tougher of the two nines.

“I knew after the first nine if I kept it in play and stayed aggressive (things would fall in place),” he said.

“I did everything pretty well, I guess.”

He said his “wedge play was phenomenal.

“I know I’m able to play really low,” he added.

“I just haven’t been able to break through. Today, I did.”

Keenan finished one shot behind a very steady effort turned in by Sherrill, who picked up his second medalist title of the season. Sherrill closed with a solid 2-under 68.

That gives Sherrill, a junior, four top five finishes in tournament play this fall.

“I really didn’t miss a lot of shots,” Sherrill said.

“I played pretty consistent.”

Sherrill was tested both days in his wire-to-wire victory. He shot 73 on Thursday at Whitefish Lake Golf Club for a one-shot edge on Whitefish’s Arthur Doorn.

His final round featured five birdies and two bogeys.

He carded a 33 on the back and 35 for the front.

“I didn’t miss too many greens,” he said.

“I gave myself decent birdie putts.”

He said he felt pressure after the turn with nine holes to play.

“Then I put it back into gear,” he said with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3 and 4.

“This give me a lot of confidence going in (to state).”

Dorn had a 73 on the last day for a 147 total. That was good for third place.

Glacier’s Greg Jones, 80-73—153 and Scott Larson, 84-70—154, placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

Flathead’s Joseph Potkonjak, 81-74—155, was seventh and Whitefish’s Mitch Young, 83-75—158, tied for ninth.

Avery won her second straight medalist title with steady rounds of 79-79—158. Last week she had a pair of 80s to win the Kalispell Invitational.

Avery won this time by two shots over Erin Tabish of Whitefish, 84-76—160.

“I scrambled hard to get the score I got,” Avery said. “I put the rally cap on on the 14th hole.”

She birdied that hole to go up by two.

She finished bogey, bogey, par, par.

“I did hit some monster drives,” she said.

“I birdied twice (once each day).”

Those were the highlights, she said.

Other than that ...

“I played so poorly,” she said.

“It was a crapshoot today.”

Katie Fyall of Whitefish, 101-83—184, finished seventh.

Flathead had a pair of top 10 performers — Jenna Jensen, 89-84—173, was third and Morgan Knutson, 98-91—189, tied for ninth.

Polson was led by Jaylin Kenney, 90-86—176, fourth overall; Peyton Anderson, 89-96—185, eighth; and Nicole Clairmont, 96-93—189, tied for ninth.

The Glacier boys and Whitefish girls were winners on the team side. The Flathead boys were second, 20 shots behind Glacier, and the Polson girls were second, 13 behind Whitefish.

The Class AA state tournament starts Tuesday in Missoula.

Class A state begins Friday in Polson.
