MISSOULA — Bigfork’s Makena Morley set a new course record at the Mountain West Classic cross country meet at the University of Montana golf course on Saturday. The meet hosted nearly 800 varsity runners and 70 schools.

Morley, a junior, has been close to the record at the prestigious event in her wins each of the last two years but blew away the old mark, held by Flathead’s Zoe Nelson, by nearly 17 seconds, crossing the line in 16:43.42. She beat Billings Senior’s Christina Aragon by more than 46 seconds to win the race.

“She was running hard and shooting for a good time,” Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said.

The meet was also a statement race for the Glacier boys, which won the team title for the first time in school history. Nearly every runner set a personal best, led by Kade McCutcheon’s ninth place finish in 15:40.72. Nathan Connell finished in 16th in 15:46.96.

The Wolfpack also got 35th, 56th and 57th place finishes to beat Bozeman for the trophy by 11 points.

“We all push each other in practice and make each other better,” McCutcheon said.

“It shows when we all perform and get a big win like this.”

The Flathead boys finished 20th and the Whitefish boys 23rd.

Columbia Falls was 45th as a team, Polson 46th, Libby 58th and Eureka 59th.

The Glacier girls finished ninth as a team, Flathead was 25th and Polson 26th.

Columbia Falls finished 38th, Whitefish 39th and Libby 54th.

“It was a perfect day, fast course and great competition,” Glacier coach Mike McLean said.

“The girls are going to keep improving. They had a real good day today. We’re just starting to see what they can do.”
