Shooting banned at experimental forest

Due to concern for public safety, recreational sport shooting has been prohibited, effective immediately, in the Coram Experimental Forest.

This includes the discharge of firearms, air rifles and gas guns, according to a news release from the Flathead National Forest.

The shooting ban does not apply to people engaged in legal hunting activities.

The Coram Experimental Forest is a research and recreation area in the Hungry Horse Ranger District.

This regulation is common across the National Forest system to protect visitors and resources.

The Coram Experimental Forest is a high-use area and close to population centers. The area has frequent use by mountain bikers, horseback riders and off-highway vehicles and also is a study area for researchers.

This area is already off-limits to firewood cutting and removal, overnight camping and campfires.

Off-highway or over-the-snow vehicles must stay on designated routes.

Violations are punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 for individuals ($10,000 for an organization), jail time of up to 6 months or both.
