Weather cancels high school tennis, softball, track events

High school softball, track and tennis events were postponed early Saturday morning due to a spring snow storm, high winds and cold temperatures.

Flathead and Glacier were scheduled to host Great Falls High and Great Falls C.M. Russell in Class AA nonconference softball play, but those events were called off. The games were set to begin at noon and 2 p.m. at the Conrad Complex and Kidsports.

“Called the games this morning at 9:45 when the stuff (snow) hit pretty heavy,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said.

“They (Great Falls and CMR) had to turn around (and go back home).”

Fors said there was a “good, white covering on everything over the fields (at Kidsports). The forecast didn’t look good. It’s softball in Montana, I guess.”

Flathead coach Ashley Fusaro was at the Conrad Complex at 6 a.m. to check things out. At that point, everything was still on.

“At 9 (a.m.) the blizzard hit,” she said.

The Bigfork Invitational managed to get five events in — three on the track and two in the field — when it was called off.

Twelve schools were in attendance. Shelby elected not to make the trip over.

“It was snowing and the wind started coming up out of the north,” Bigfork assistant coach Wayne Loeffler said.

“The temperature dropped 5 to 10 degrees within a half hour. When we called it, it was 32 degrees.”

This event was also snowed out last year during the 100-meter dash.

The Columbia Falls Iceberg Invitational track meet was called at 10 a.m. after a coaches’ meeting.

“Snow and 40-mile per hour winds were too adverse of a climate to subject our athletes to,” Columbia Falls activities director Troy Bowman said.

Eight schools were in attendance.

The Hamilton at Columbia Falls tennis match was also called off.

The Whitefish at Polson tennis dual was postponed because of the weather.

Polson, however, managed to complete many of the events at its triangular track meet with Anaconda and Butte Central, which was scheduled to begin at noon. Because a number of events were not held, no team totals were kept.

Most of the events Saturday that were called off will not be rescheduled.
