A man working at a gas station on U.S. 2 East reported a gas drive-off to the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, although it was a bit more complicated than the usual “gas up and run.” The man reportedly went into the gas station and informed the employee that he forgot his debit card at home. The kindly worker agreed to allow the customer to leave his ID, which was a Montana Department of Corrections identification card, while he went home to get his debit card. The employee notified police after waiting 35 minutes for the man to return. No word yet, but possibly the man lived out of town? Out of state? Out of country? Could be a long wait.

The man stated he was a retired sergeant from New York City and wanted to know if the mission was a “legit organization.” The caller was insistent on the report being sent to detectives, but dispatch told him there has to be a crime committed in order to do so. The caller then told dispatch, “you aren’t real cops” and “thanks for nothing” before hanging up.
