Senior Am: Schweitzer gains on defending champ Garland

by The Daily Inter Lake
| August 6, 2014 11:26 PM

WHITEFISH — The toughest course of the tournament did its job on Wednesday, separating the pack at the Montana State Senior Amateur golf tournament. Playing on Whitefish Lake Golf Club’s North Course, Bozeman’s Fred Schweitzer and Ron Garland rose to the top of the heap, taking a one-stroke lead into the final day.

Schweitzer shot a second-day low round of 72 to gain three strokes on Garland and the other opening round leaders. Garland, the defending state Senior Am champ, carded a 74 to also sit at 143 and 1-over-par for the tournament.

Kalispell’s Earl Rife is one shot back at 2-over after carding a second straight 72, tying for the low round of the day. Kalispell’s Jim Schaible is one of three golfers a 3-over. Polson’s Steve Lucas and Bigfork’s Ron Ramsey, leaders after the opening round, fell back to 5-over, four shots back of the leaders.

The lead group will close the tournament at Buffalo Hill Golf Club with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. At the same time, groups will also start at Whitefish Lake’s North Course and Village Greens.
