Legion baseball: Twins' run ends in Alaska
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Glacier Twins’ regional championship hopes faltered at the hands of the Cody (Wyo.) Cubs as the Wyoming state champs defeated Glacier 3-1 in close matchup, knocking them out of contention for the title at the Northwest Class A Regional American Legion baseball tournament on Monday.
The game featured just two pitchers, as Glacier’s AJ Wetsch and Cody’s John Beaudrie battled on the mound, combining for 11 hits and 10 strikeouts.
The Twins reached Beaudrie first, scoring their only run of the game with two outs in the top of the first inning.
Colten Parker drew a two-out walk before Vinny Smith drove Beaudrie’s 1-0 pitch to deep center field for an RBI double.
Cody responded in the bottom half with one run of their own to tie the game, and that’s when Beaudrie got hot.
The Cubs’ pitcher struck out seven batters and wouldn’t allow the Twins to cross the plate again.
Cody pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fifth on just one hit. Kevin Page’s single was the only ball to leave the infield as the Cubs used three separate fielder’s choices to score the go-ahead run.
AJ Wetsch buckled down after the inning. He finished with three strikeouts, allowing just four hits in the the contest without surrendering a walk.
But Beaudrie’s arm proved to be too much for the Twins who couldn’t answer Cody’s fifth inning.
Smith finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Tristin Steinwand matched his teammates effort with a 2 for 4 performance of his own. Jayce Fagerland, Kyler Howke and Parker each recorded hits for Glacier.
