Glacier's Avery loses G.F. Invite playoff
GREAT FALLS — Glacier’s Teigan Avery tied for the girls’ lead after 36 holes at the Great Falls Invitational golf meet on Tuesday at Eagle Falls Golf Club, but finished second in a scorecard playoff in the season-opening tournament.
Avery, who entered the final day leading by four strokes, shot an 8-over-par 79 in her second round and 151 for the tournament, giving way to Butte’s Shealyn Hafer.
Hafer, who competed with Avery to win the Montana-Alberta Ryder Cup last week, was steady on the tough final-round course, shooting 75 to best Avery and the field by four strokes and force the playoff. She won by virtue of a par at the par-5 16th hole, the second-hardest handicap hole on the course. Avery shot bogey on the hole.
It was a rough day on the leaderboard for the top golfers. The only other girls to shoot sub-80 on Monday, Bozeman’s Bridget Beyer and Billings West’s Hannah Zwemke and Hayden Flohr, shot 82, 81 and 87, respectively, to fall out of contention.
Glacier’s girls team finished third behind Great Falls High and West. The Wolfpack was aided by McKenna Hulslander (88-92—180), Kyersten Seibanler (94-101—195), McKenna Tinseth (99-100—199) and Emma Epperly (121-113—234).
Flathead’s girls were ninth in the 12-team Class AA tournament, led by Jenna Jenson (80-95—175), who finished tied for 11th, and Morgan Knutson (89-89—178), who was 15th. Liz Lorentz (111-108—219), Rebecca Knutson (107-126—233) and Katie Stobie (125-130—255) also golfed for the Bravettes.
Glacier’s Cody Sherrill (73-70—143) finished third on the boys’ side, finishing his round 1-under and three strokes behind repeat winner Easton Enott of Great Falls C.M. Russell. Flathead’s Ryan Keenan (74-71—145) finished seventh and the Wolfpack’s Scott Larson (71-75—146) tied for eighth.
Glacier was fifth as a team, with Tom Mann (77-73—150) tied for 12th. Sam Stern (84-84—168) scored for the Wolfpack and AJ Grande (94-90—184) also made the trip.
Flathead was last out of 14 teams, also getting rounds from Matthew Marshall (84-83—167), Nick Weaver (85-86—171), Ginseppe Vinchesi (93-91—184), Jeffrey Bingtson (120-91—211) and Evan Miles (95-120—215).
Both Flathead and Glacier will be back on the links Monday for the two-day Missoula Invitational.
