Junia Nelson, 99

| August 26, 2014 3:20 PM

After a brave battle with age, Junia Nelson passed away on Aug. 15, 2014, at 99 years, 1 month.

Her husband, Dan, preceded her in death by six months.

Junia was born on July 15, 1915, in Gorham, N.H. In 1919 her father, Junius St. John Benedict, left the Forest Service and moved the family to Parkdale, Ore., where he established a 40-acre apple/pear orchard.

Junia met Dan while working as a summer employee in Yellowstone Park. They were married on Sept. 11, 1940, at the Chapel of Transfiguration in Moose, Wyo.

After World War II and many years in the Park Service (Yellowstone, Yosemite and Glacier) Dan retired and they moved to Kalispell. In 2009 they moved to Denver to be near family.

Junia is survived by sons, Barry and Nancy, Toby and Jeannette, and Ray and Denise; along with four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
