Don't you dare miss the air show
That sound of thunder in the skies over the Flathead Valley on Thursday afternoon was a harbinger of things to come.
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds roared into the valley ahead of this weekend’s Mountain Madness air show.
There will be more aerial exhibitions today as the team practices before the main events Saturday and Sunday at Glacier Park International Airport.
The air show promises to be the biggest single event in the valley this year, with a crowd of 30,000 expected to watch the Thunderbirds and a host of other attractions ranging from a 400-mph jet truck to barnstormer-type aerial acts.
There is something elemental about an air show with the roar of jet engines, the amazing speed of the aircraft and the beauty and precision of the aerial maneuvers.
This year, of course, we have our own hometown hero in the skies when Maj. Jason Curtis flies his No. 6 fighter jet.

Evergreen work appreciated
A long-awaited fix to Evergreen’s storm-water drainage problems is underway. It will be a relief to Evergreen businesses and the traveling public as well to no longer have to deal with “Lake McDonald,” the notorious huge pool of water that forms in the area near the Evergreen McDonald’s restaurant every time it rains or there’s heavy snowmelt.
The best part of the project, though, may be that state road crews are doing the work at night. Because there are few residential homes along that stretch of U.S. 2, the work can be done overnight to avoid disrupting daytime traffic.
And we all know there are plenty of other traffic disruptions in the Kalispell area right now. With myriad street projects underway simultaneously, it can be difficult to get around the city these days.
Summer road construction is one of those things that no one looks forward to, but we sure like driving on those improved roads once they’re finished.
