Fast start for Glacier runners
LIBBY — Freshman Annie Hill of Glacier had an impressive varsity debut on Saturday at the Libby Invitational cross country meet.
Hill cruised to a winning time of 17 minutes, 31.35 seconds. Her margin of victory was a noteworthy item as she finished just over a minute ahead of the field.
“That’s what we expected from Annie,” Glacier coach Mike McLean said. “That’s a good start for her. All seven of our girls ran well.”
Glacier seniors Kade McCutcheon and Brock Sandry finished 1-2 in the boys race with times of 15:48.90 and 15:55.04, respectively. They were the lone runners to dip under 16 minutes.
Glacier, with 28 points, won the boys team title. The Wolfpack girls were second to Sandpoint, Idaho.
The Glacier boys had four runners in the top 10. Logan Harmon, 16:13.84, was sixth and Ruben Castren, 16:36.93, was eighth.
“Again, all of our boys ran well,” McLean said. “A great start, a very strong start.”
The Glacier girls had another runner finish in the top 10 with Corinne Hamilton, 19:30.23, eighth.
Samantha Mundel of Columbia Falls was third in 18:43.72.
“From top to bottom, everyone who ran at this course last year ran faster this year,” Columbia Falls coach Richard Menicke said of his girls.
“That’s very encouraging.”
Mundel’s time was a personal best and beat her school record by eight seconds.
Whitefish’s Sarah Latcham, 19:16.97, was seventh and Eureka’s Alexandra Bartmess, 19:36.84, was 10th.
“She had a good race and I’m looking for her to keep improving,” Whitefish coach Sarah Brist said of Latcham.
“We’ll see how the season progresses for her.”
