Mountain lion cubs rescued in fire
MISSOULA (AP) — Firefighters in western Montana rescued two mountain lion cubs from the burning log under which they were hiding.
Bitterroot National Forest spokesman Tod McKay told the Missoulian a crew was digging a fire line on Friday when they heard noises coming from under the log.
The fire prevented the crew from reaching the log, so they called in a helicopter that dropped 600 gallons of water.
McKay says the cubs came out when the fire was extinguished. He estimated they were less than two weeks old.
McKay says he does not know what will happen to the cubs. Crews did not see any other mountain lions in the area.
Crews are fighting a 48-acre fire in the Sapphire Mountains about nine miles east of Florence.
