Off in a splash: Local swimmers kick off season at Kalispell Invite

Sophomore Nate Burnham won the 200 freestyle and freshman Jessica Loyda turned in the fastest time in the 50 freestyle to lead the Glacier boys and girls at the Kalispell Invitational swim meet on Saturday at The Summit.

Burnham was the only swimmer to break 2 minutes in his event, posting a time of 1:56.58. He won by just over nine seconds.

Loyda was timed in 26.35. She was the lone entrant to dip under 27 seconds in her specialty.

Glacier’s James Bouda, a freshman, had second-best showings in the 200 individual medley, 2:14:44, and 100 freestyle, 53.38.

“The freshmen swam really well,” Glacier/Flathead coach Dave Lillard said of Loyda and Bouda.

“They were either first or second with best times.”

Burnham had personal best times in the freestyle and 100 backstroke, 1:00.78. He finished second in the backstroke.

“We have a lot of new swimmers,” Lillard said.

“It takes a lot of bravery to swim in front of your peers for the first time. That was impressive.”

Flathead edged Glacier at the finish in a thrilling 200 boys freestyle relay.

Glacier’s girls were second in the 200 medley relay.

“This was more like a marker for us, to find out where we are at,” Lillard said.

“For the first meet and swimming just two weeks, I was not expecting best times, but if we got them that’s great.”

On the team front, C.M. Russell won the girls team title, 338 points, with Missoula Hellgate second, 278.

Glacier, 148, was fourth; Flathead, 85, fifth; Columbia Falls, 26, seventh; and Whitefish, 13, ninth.

Hellgate, 172, edged CMR by eight points to finish first in the boys team standings.

Flathead, 126, was third; Columbia Falls, 118, fifth; Glacier, 112, sixth; and Whitefish, 9, ninth.

Columbia Falls, competing in its first swim meet, had two individual winners in Colton Babcock and Zayne Friar.

Babcock won the 200 individual medley, 2:12.12, and the mixed 500 freestyle, 5:07.90, while Friar was first in the 100 butterfly, 1:00.77.

Teammate Jacob Hohman was second in the 50 freestyle, 26.04.

Friar was also fourth in the 100 backstroke, 1:04.53.

Columbia Falls finished second in the boys 400 freestyle relay and third in the 200 medley relay.

This was also the first swim meet for Whitefish.

Up next for the local teams is the Butte Invitational on Saturday.
