Despite Matt Marshall’s career-high 23 points, the Flathead Braves dropped a nonconference boys basketball shootout with Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, 94-81 on Saturday night at Flathead High School.

Teammate Tyler Johnson was the only other Brave in double figures, scoring 21 points in the effort.

Flathead (1-5 overall) led 33-23 with 4:12 left in the first half, but the Vikings began their surge, cutting the deficit to three points before the break.

Tony Naccarato scored a game-high 29 points, Elliot Sparks finished with 25 and Joe Naccarato netted 17 while grabbing 13 boards for a double-double as the Vikings (6-3) scored 57 second-half points to run away with the road victory.

“(Coeur d’Alene) is certainly a big, physical, athletic team and I thought our kids did a great job competing with them. I’m really proud of the effort of these kids.” Flathead coach Fred Febach said.

“We need to rebound better defensively and we can’t give up that many points in our own gym. We have to get better at that part of our game, but I saw a lot of good things out there as well.”

The Vikings pulled in 18 offensive rebounds and 38 total while shooting 53 percent from the free-throw line. The Braves committed 30 personal fouls with three Braves fouling out.

Marshall’s career day was highlighted by his efficiency. The junior was 9 for 12 from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc.

“I thought Marshall was outstanding,” Febach said.

“He plays so well for us. He’s our offensive leader out there. He’s kind of a wiry kid, but he’s tough enough to play through contact. He’s got a nice little runner and if you leave him open he’s got a nice jump shot. He certainly played well for us.”

Flathead hosts Missoula Big Sky on Jan. 8 at 7:15 p.m. in Western AA play.
