Cascade Quartet offers wide-ranging repertoire

| February 20, 2014 2:37 PM

Glacier Symphony and Chorale is hosting an evening of chamber music featuring the acclaimed Cascade String Quartet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, at Whitefish Performing Arts Center. The ensemble is fresh off a tour of Northwest Montana where they have held residencies at schools in Libby, Whitefish and Troy.

Based in Great Falls, the quartet is comprised of Mary Papoulis, violin, Megan Karls, violin, Madison Johnson, viola and Thaddeus Suits, cello. As the resident string quartet of the Great Falls Symphony they have been enriching communities across Montana and the Northwest for over three decades. They are praised for their cross-discipline collaborations and have worked closely with multimedia artists, dancers, choirs, world percussionists and jazz artists. Noted past collaborations include Yo Yo Ma, the Ying Quartet, and Grammy nominee Philip Aaberg.

For the concert in Whitefish the quartet has prepared a repertoire of music spanning the range from classical to contemporary, including a quartet by Mozart from when he was at the height of his creative powers, a hauntingly beautiful meditation by the Czech Romantic-era composer Josef Suk, and selections by Grieg, Rimsky- Korsakov, and the greatly influential American minimalist composer Philip Glass. Comfortable in many styles, the Cascade Quartet has also been known to throw in an occasional surprise in the form of a popular song by Adele or Led Zeppelin.

Tickets are available in a range of two seating tiers and tickets for youth through grade 12 are free. Adults are priced at $18 and $20, seniors $15 and $20 and college $12 and $15.
