Mosaic classes prepare artist for mural-making
A full schedule of classes, community workshops and grouting sessions are planned for the Stumptown Art Studio Windows on Whitefish project.
In January 2012 Stumptown Art Studio launched the community public art project. It involves the creation of a series of large mosaic murals installed on the exterior wall at Second Street and Central Avenue on the Latitude 48 building. The theme of the murals depicts the mountain range during each of the four seasons and is designed to capture the essence of life in Whitefish. In September 2012 the first of the four murals, “Spring,” was unveiled with a proclamation by the mayor and community celebration. In May 2013 the second mural, “Summer,” was made public.
Deb Stika, artistic director of Windows on Whitefish, has developed the images that will be used in the murals, and will assist and instruct the general public in the construction of the murals. Community members are invited to participate by taking a class in which they will learn the art of mosaic-making.
Over the past years the projects have included mini-windows, fish and hanging garden charms. Participants created these projects to learn the skills of mosaic-making. After taking a class, they are welcome to come to any of the free community sessions to work on the actual 6-by-9 foot “windows.”
The learning project for March is to create a sign, as demonstrated by the photo.
Classes are: Saturday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Wednesday, March 19 from 5 to 9 p.m.
Space for classes is limited and pre-registration is required by calling Stumptown Art Studio at 862-5929.
Work on the third Windows on Whitefish panel, “Fall,” has begun and is awaiting participation from those who have already taken a mosaic-making training class. Free community sessions are on March 6, 8, 20 and 22. A grouting session is scheduled for March 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. Call the studio for details.
All classes and sessions are being held at the former Coldwell Banker Building at 105 Baker Ave. in Whitefish.
