The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Flathead and Mission Valleys Sunday afternoon.

It remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday.

The weather service is recommending residents not drive, as heavy snow is expected. The Kalispell area was projected to get between three and five inches of snow, along with north to east winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph.

“Gusty winds will cause blowing and drifting snow and whiteout conditions at times, especially along the southern and eastern areas of Flathead Lake,” the report read.

The Mission Valley is expected to get a full blizzard, with eight to 14 inches of snow.

If you must travel, the weather service advises carrying a flashlight, food and water in your vehicle.

Conditions are expected to improve by Monday afternoon, but temperatures  will remain low and some precipitation is expected.
