Documentary on Blackfeet to show in Kalispell

| February 27, 2014 9:56 AM

A new documentary by Kalispell native Nicolas Hudak will be shown free at the Museum at Central School in Kalispell, Friday, March 7, at 5:30 p.m.

"Where God Likes to Be" tells the inspiring true story of three Blackfeet youth who meet and overcome obstacles growing up in Browning to find success in the world beyond the reservation. This will be the third screening ever of the new film.

Five years in the making, "Where God Likes to Be" enjoyed a successful world premiere on Feb. 22 in Missoula's Wilma 1 Theater as part of the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival.

The filmmakers, Hudak and ???, said this about the premiere.

"Our screening in Missoula at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival exceeded all of our expectations. It was absolutely amazing! People were lining up outside in the snow waiting to get a ticket to the film, the theatre (well over 1,000 seats) was filling up quickly and people kept lining up.

“We couldn’t have wished for a friendlier crowd: There was laughter, absolute silence, sniffles and sobs and a rapturous applause as the credits started rolling.

“We have never been as relieved as we were when we felt the embrace of support from the members of the Blackfeet Nation who were in attendance. Comments ranged from: 'It was an amazing experience!' to 'Blackfeet liked seeing the rez in a good light for a change' and 'Spirit of family and tribal tradition.'"

Hudak has worked as cinematographer and photographer on commercial projects and filmed feature-length documentaries. He is an Independent Filmmaker Project fellow and currently resides in Berlin, Germany.

The Museum at Central School is located at 124 2nd Ave E, Kalispell. Donations will be accepted to help with the cost of producing and promoting the new film. Call 756-8381 for more information.
