Crash blocks traffic at busy junction

Traffic was blocked at the intersection of U.S. 93 and Montana 40 for more than an hour and a half Thursday following a four-vehicle accident that drew a response from the Montana Highway Patrol and the Whitefish Fire Department. Several people were injured in the crash, which occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. The road was cleared and fully reopened by shortly after 7 p.m.


The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office received contact from a burglarized business as well as a tipster after a man stole five or six glass pipes, each valued at between $40 and $80, from a U.S. 2 East head shop. The man reportedly was driving a sport-utility vehicle with “designer duct tape” on the side. A tipster later called and said her daughter saw a post on Facebook indicating a man and woman had just robbed a local head shop.

After finding his neighbor’s daughter and another man in a vehicle on his Cheery Lynn Road property and subsequently discovering (through some quick online research) that the woman had “been in a lot of trouble,” he reported her to police, sharing his concern that she and the man may have gotten stuck while attempting to steal something or using drugs in his driveway.

A bummed boat owner reported he had left his boat at a person’s house and that person then got arrested, further stating that person’s son had sold the boat to another person, who sold it to yet another person who was able to get it titled and registered under her name. The boat’s rightful owner was told it was a civil issue, to which he responded that he would contact a lawyer.

A South Woodland Drive man called seeking help to get back the sheets he claimed his ex didn’t give back when they broke up. When contacted by a deputy, the ex said she had no idea what sheets he was talking about, as they changed bed sizes while together and purchased several sets.

A U.S. 2 East man reported two men outside his home yelling, banging on the door and threatening to shoot him, later saying it looked like they were going to break out the windows of his vehicle.

A passing motorist called 911 to report the brake lights and taillights were out on a bus on Second Avenue West. Once advised of the problem, the bus driver stopped and corrected the issue.

A Bigfork resident returned home from an out-of-state trip to find someone had broken into the resident’s home.

A disappointed dog owner reported she was bitten by her own pet.


A Montana Highway Patrol trooper "handled the situation” when a reckless propane truck driver was reported for almost running one motorist into a guardrail on U.S. 2 East and then almost hitting another motorist in front of the first one.


The Kalispell Police Department was contacted by a representative of a South Main Street store after a young man brought in several medals to see what they might be worth. The representative was suspicious that the medals may have come from a Vietnam veteran’s dress uniform, recently reported stolen along with the medals that adorned it. When the man left the store he “gave a sharp whistle like he was getting a ride from someone.”

A spurned boyfriend contacted police after showing up at his girlfriend’s Two Mile Drive home, where he found her with another man who got in his face and waved a Taser at him while the girl pushed him back out. The now-former boyfriend was told he was no longer welcome at the residence and was advised to move along.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested and transported to the Flathead County Juvenile Detention Center after pushing his mother and sister around, choking, punching and pulling the hair of his sister at their Fourth Avenue West home.

Drugs were found in the shoe of a child following a supervised visit by the child’s parents. The shoes and other clothing had been brought in by the father.

A woman reported her niece and daughter were threatened by a woman at a West Nevada Street school. The offending party was contacted and counseled on bullying at school.

A ski boat and trailer as well as a canoe and trailer were stolen from a Seventh Avenue West property. The owner suspected his ex-wife.

Fishing and hunting gear was stolen from an unlocked vehicle on River View Drive.

A purse was stolen from a First Avenue East library.

A dog attacked and killed another dog on Fly Way.

Shoes were stolen from a locker on Wolfpack Way.


A Columbia Falls Police officer used a Taser on a man involved in a fight with another man behind a Nucleus Avenue bar Thursday evening. The man was arrested at the scene, but both men were later released to a sober driver.


A meandering motorist stopped by a Whitefish police officer on East Fourth Street was discovered to be sober.

A “somewhat vicious” dog was reported running around a Colorado Avenue apartment complex, growling and barking at a person.

A dog was reported chasing deer in the area of Karrow Avenue.
