Mats Cats pin Pirates, Broncs in NW A duals
COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls wrapped up the dual portion of its wrestling schedule Friday night by edging fifth-ranked Frenchtown and beating Polson.
Columbia Falls, ranked fourth in the lastest Class A coaches’ poll, held a 37-36 lead on Frenchtown heading into the final match of the night. Shonn Roberts, a junior and two-time defending state champion, won by pin at 132 pounds to give the Mat Cats a 43-36 dual win.
Columbia Falls beat Polson 53-23.
Individual results from both matches were not available.
All three school will compete in the Northwestern A divisional tournament on Feb. 8 in Libby. The state tournament follows Feb. 14-15 in Billings.

WHITEFISH — Fifth-ranked Frenchtown and Polson both defeated Whitefish in Northwestern A dual action.
While it was a down note on the team front, it was another stellar showing, however, for Whitefish’s Matthew Sampson. The 152-pound junior raised his season record to 23-11 with a 5-3 decision against Frenchtown and a pin in 36 seconds in the Polson matchup.
Sampson has won 12 matches by pins this season.
“He’s very good as far as technique-wise,” Whitefish coach Ryan Boyle said of his standout.
“He has a lot of confidence right now.”
Up next for the three schools is the Northwestern A divisional tournament on Feb. 8 at Libby. State follows in Billings Feb. 14-15.
