Town thrives on volunteers

Lakeside is one of those communities that captures the essence of small-town spirit.

Tucked into Flathead Lake’s west shore, Lakeside’s appeal is more than the beckoning big, blue expanse of freshwater at its front door. The small town thrives because of locals who like to think big and organize such popular community events as the recent ham dinner fundraiser for the Lakeside Quick Response Unit/Ambulance.

Lois Lauman is one of the volunteers who helped with the June 1 event and wrote on behalf of the QRU/Ambulance board to thank everyone who supported the fundraiser.

Though it was just the second year the dinner has been held, it’s already raised more than $9,000 for the QRU, whose team of volunteer responders must earn and continually renew their EMT certification, investing many hours in training to update themselves on the latest medical technology.

“They sacrifice their personal life to save your life,” said Lauman, who calls herself a firm believer in volunteerism.

“Communities would have a hard time surviving without volunteers. It doesn’t make any difference if it is the school, library, food bank, fire department or QRU. We depend on volunteers.”

From providing beverages to raffle prizes, many businesses contributed to the success of the dinner. Vista Linda Catering served more than 330 people this year — nearly 100 more than last year.

“This truly shows community support and we thank you for that,” Lauman said. The money raised will help maintain the new QRU facility and purchase supplies and equipment needed to keep the two ambulances up to date for the team of six paramedics who are trained to perform advanced life-support procedures.

“They can do what I can’t and I can do what the QRU responders can’t; when we put it all together, great things happen.” Lauman said.

Lakeside’s next big event is the Lakeside Community Fair Saturday, July 12. The event is celebrating its silver anniversary this year. Over the last 25 years the Lakeside Community Club has raised and donated more than $400,000 to numerous local organizations including the Somers and Rollins Fire Departments, West Shore Community Library, West Shore Food Bank, Somers and Lakeside schools, ALERT, Wings, Samaritan House and more.

And it’s all been done by volunteers. The original club was founded back in 1910 as the Lakeside Ladies Club. In 1929 it became the Welfare Club. Today the Lakeside Community Club has grown to more than 170 members.

The theme of this year’s fair is “Shore Party.” With its long-standing tradition as a fun event that draws hundreds to Lakeside and Flathead Lake every July, there will be plenty reason to celebrate.
