Legion Baseball: Loggers sweep Missoula twin bill
LIBBY — After falling behind early in the first game of an American Legion doubleheader, the Libby Loggers managed a comeback en route to a two-game sweep of the Missoula Mavericks on Tuesday night.
The Mavericks put up four runs in the first inning in the opening game, all of which were unearned as Libby starting pitcher Will Reichel found himself in a hole early in the contest.
He would settle down throughout the game, striking out seven in as many innings of work.
The Loggers chipped away at the Mavericks lead, scoring a run in the second, third and fourth innings before right fielder Matt Willis’ two-run double in the bottom of the fifth highlighted an eight-run rally. The Loggers went on to take the first contest, 11-5.
Willis finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Center fielder Cameron Burkes also tallied three hits.
Erik Lauer finished 2 for 3 with an RBI as did third baseman Dylan Lane. Left fielder Braden Thom earned two RBIs.
The Loggers were out-hit in the night cap of the twin bill as Missoula had nine hits, including four doubles and a home run, but Libby’s consistent night at the plate allowed them to escape with a 6-5 victory.
The Loggers scored two in the bottom of the first before tying the game at three, heading into the fourth inning.
Reichel’s two-RBI single in the bottom half of the inning gave Libby a 6-4 lead, that proved to be enough for the sweep.
Luke Haggerty earned the win on the mound for Libby. He struck out one batter and allowed just two walks before leaving the game in the top of the sixth. He was relieved by Dylan Lane who earned the two-inning save.
Reichel finished the second game with three RBIs on a 2 for 4 effort. Burkes was a perfect 2 for 2 in the night cap, while Lane had two RBIs without registering a hit.
The Loggers will play in the Lewistown, Idaho Tournament on Friday.
