Grizzly near Red Lodge moved after killing cow
BILLINGS (AP) — A grizzly bear that killed a young cow near Red Lodge in southern Montana has been captured and relocated to the Upper Gallatin area north of Yellowstone National Park.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said the bear was captured by state and federal officials on a privately owned ranch between Red Lodge and Belfry on Tuesday. The bear killed the cow in the Red Lodge area Sunday.
Agency spokeswoman Andrea Jones says the 8-year-old bear was healthy and had no prior conflicts. However, it’s likely to be killed if another conflict occurs.
Jones says the bruin will be closely monitored in its new location.
Bears in and around Yellowstone National Park in recent years have been expanding into lower elevation habitats, where they can cause problems with people and livestock.
