Glacier's St. Mary Visitor Center closed
The St. Mary Visitor Center on the east side of Glacier National Park has been closed due to water damage early Thursday morning from the center’s sprinkler system.
According to a news release from the park, it is believed the furnace in the center malfunctioned, perhaps causing a fire, and the center’s sprinkler system was activated.
Park rangers responded to the alarm at 4 a.m. Thursday.
There was water damage to the building and its contents along with damage to some utility systems.
Restoration specialists were evaluating the extent of the damage on Thursday afternoon.
It is unknown how long the Visitor Center will be closed.
In the meantime, a temporary visitor contact and information center has been set up in the Visitor Center parking lot. Park rangers will be available to help visitors.
Restroom facilities at the visitor center are available. Evening interpretive programs continue at St. Mary Campground as scheduled.
Backcountry permits and aquatic invasive species boat inspections will be available at the Hudson Bay District Office in the park administrative area in St. Mary. Signs near the park entrance will be posted to provide directions.
The park shuttle system and transportation services by Xanterra and Sun Tours are unaffected and operating as scheduled.
Since there currently is no phone service at the St. Mary Visitor Center, visitors are encouraged to contact the park at 406-888-7800 for information or visit www.nps.gov/glac/index.htm.
