Close encounter of the grizzly kind

When confronted by a grizzly bear on Glacier National Park’s Highline Trail on Monday evening, a hiker from North Carolina was forced to scamper off the trail to let the bear pass by. The encounter occurred in the Rimrocks area where the trail is cut into the cliff overlooking Going-to-the-Sun Road. Phillip Granrud of Kalispell watched the drama unfold: “They surprised each other at about 50 feet. The grizzly was startled for a sec and the hiker had to make a decision pretty quickly — turn back or climb down the cliffs away and hope for the best either way.” Once the hiker was off the trail, the grizzly sprinted past him.
