BUTTE — Bigfork junior Makena Morley won both the 800- and 3,200-meter runs on Saturday to complete a sweep of the distance races and help the Valkyries to a second place finish at the Class B state track meet.

Morley outran teammate Emily Cheroske in the 800 with a time of 2:12.62 to lead a 1-2 finish in the event. She won the 3,200 by more than a minute in 10:58.85. Morley also won the 1,600 on Friday.

The Bigfork girls were the only team within reach of Plains in the team scores but still finished well short with 58.5 to the Trotters’ 83.

Cheroske and Morley also ran legs in the Vals’ winning 1,600 relay, which timed out in 4:08.18. Marissa Hiza, who ran the third leg of that race, finished in a tie for fifth in the high jump. Tessa Robertson was sixth in the shot put.

Eureka’s Emily Billow won the shot put by half a foot with a toss of 40 feet, 1 1/2 inches. The Lions’ Alex Bartmess was fourth in the 3,200, crossing in 12:10.31, and their 400 relay team finished fifth. Eureka was 11th as a team with 29 points.

The Bigfork boys finished a distant fourth as a team behind a close race in the top three. Manhattan edged Glasgow and Troy by five and a half points to win the state championship.

Logan Morley led the Vikings on the track, matching his older sister with a win in the 1,600, finishing in 4:34.58. In the field, Josh Sandry won the high jump championship with a height of 6-2, beating Troy’s Sean Opland on jumps.

Carson Cantrell finished sixth in 300 hurdles, Bigfork’s 400 relay team finished fourth and the Vikings’ 1,600 relay team finished sixth.

Eureka finished 10th as a team with 21 points behind a strong performance in the hurdles. Brandon Conard finished second and Christian Langston fourth in the 110 hurdles. Khaz Yanak finished fourth in the triple jump.

Opland finished second in the 200 and fourth in the 100 for Troy. Nathan Olds was second in the triple jump and third in the high jump and the Trojans finished fourth in the long relay.
