A suspicious package that led to a bomb scare in Kalispell on Friday turned out to contain a cooling device used to ship biological material.

According to a release from the Kalispell Police Department, the package was reported by an employee of the UPS facility at 1151 N. Meridian Road at 3:25 p.m.

A UPS staff member with military experience examined the package and believed it looked like an improvised explosive device.

A dispatch log stated the object was in a black pelican case which, when opened, contained three wrapped batteries and a foil-wrapped cube.

A Missoula County emergency ordnance disposal team responded and, upon investigation with robots, determined the package not to be dangerous.

Further investigation determined its contents as the cooling device.

The release states it does not appear that the package was associated with any criminal or dangerous activity.

Kalispell police were assisted by the Montana Highway Patrol, Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, Kalispell Fire Department and FBI as well as Kalispell Public Works.
