LAUREL — Kalispell’s Teigan Avery and Libby’s Ryggs Johnston continue to tear up the summer golf season, each posting another victory at the Montana State Golf Association’s State Junior Championships at the Laurel Golf Club on Tuesday.

Both Johnston and Avery won their age division on the par 72 course while posting the best score out of every division to earn the overall state championship.

Johnston, competing in the Boys 14-15 year-old age division started his tournament with a 74 on Monday before shooting a 75 on Tuesday to earn a score of 149 to claim the championship. He beat out Billings’ Caleb Trost, who shot a 153 in the division.

Billings’ Payton Stott of the 16-17 year-old division shot a 151, giving Johnston the overall championship.

Avery, a Girls 16-17-year old division competitor shot a 150, holding off Billings’ Hannah Zwemke and her 158 score to claim both the division championship and overall title.

It is Avery’s sixth divisional championship of the season and her second overall title.

After posting a 73 in the opening round, Avery  looked to improve her score, but her second round 77 had to suffice to win the title.

“(Monday) I didnt play my best and I was hoping to do better than that and I wanted to prove it (Tuesday.) Unfortunately, it didnt happen, but other than that I played some solid golf,” Avery said.

“I had to put away my driver on the back nine because I wasn’t hitting so well. I had been through some adversity before, so I took from those expereinces and calmed myself down and got myself back to playing good golf.”

With their state championships, Johnston and Avery have qualified for the Junior America’s Cup on July 27.

Johnston and the boys division will compete at the Shaughnessy Country Club in Vancouver, British Columbia, while Avery will head to Walla Walla, Washington to play at the Walla Walla Country Club.

Yesterday’s titles will also allow Johnston and Avery to play in the Montana/Alberta Junior Ryder Cup on August 11 at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
