Helena Flats School is looking for a new superintendent/principal following the June 17 resignation of Gary Weitz.

Weitz joined the district in 2012 from Colfax, Wash. Weitz noted in his resignation letter that he was retiring.

Weitz is the fourth school superintendent in the Flathead Valley to leave office this year. Superintendents in Kalispell, Columbia Falls and Bigfork also have stepped down.

Applications for the Helena Flats position will be accepted through July 3. Board vice chairwoman Kai Ellen Bucher said the district is looking for a qualified, experienced candidate whose goals align with Helena Flats.

Since opening the position in June, the board has received five applications. Bucher said the board would begin interviewing candidates as soon as possible after July 3.

Helena Flats is a kindergarten- through eighth-grade school with an enrollment of 212. The school uses a Montessori approach for grades kindergarten through fourth. The superintendent/principal would oversee approximately 23 employees.

Helena Flats Clerk Tonnie Decker said it would be ideal to fill the position by mid-August.
