Train derailment still blocking U.S. 93

 A day after a massive train derailment shut down U.S. 93 and rail lines, BNSF was still attempting to clear the way.

At around 3 p.m. Saturday, 45 empty coal cars jumped the track and spilled out next to the tracks just outside Olney. The cars blocked traffic on the highway, with cars being rerouted by Montana Highway Patrol on the Olney Loop Road around the blockage.

A Montana Department of Transportation notice initially indicated the highway and track were projected to open at around 11 p.m. Saturday. 

By 3 p.m. Sunday, both remained closed. 

BNSF spokesperson Matthew Jones said travelers could expect the highway to reopen Sunday evening.

The train was eastbound, originating in British Columbia, and no one was injured in the accident. No further information was available as of Sunday afternoon.
