Class B boys state basketball: Bigfork blasts Joliet, 66-41

BOZEMAN — For top-ranked and undefeated Bigfork, it’s on to the semifinals.

The Vikings (24-0) opened the Class B state boys basketball tournament Thursday afternoon with an impressive 66-41 triumph over Joliet in first-round play at Montana State University.

“Exactly as planned,” Bigfork coach Josh Downey said of how the game unfolded.

“We had a good chance to rest the starters four minutes into the third quarter. That’s a huge advantage for us to rest them for the semifinals tomorrow.”

Bigfork will face Huntley Project (20-4) tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the semis. The winner advances to Saturday’s title game at 8.

Christian Evans topped Bigfork in scoring with 17 points. He was 7 of 9 from the field and made his lone free throw attempt. Issac Martel was 6 of 8 shooting and 1 of 1 at the charity stripe to finish with 14 points.

“He hit a couple treys, got a couple big defensive rebounds,” Downey said of Evans in the early going.

“All our guards were playing so scrappy, getting hands on the ball, deflections.”

Bigfork doubled the score on Joliet in the opening quarter, 22-11, and took a 36-18 lead to the locker room at the half.

“We shot 70 percent in the first half, only had three turnovers,” Downey said.

“We’re definitely playing our best basketball right now.”

Downey told his players at intermission “not to relax. To play every possession like it matters.”

Downey said the bench players hit their shots and played solid basketball.

“It was great to get those guys as many minutes as we can,” he said.

Regarding tonight’s contest ...

“We’ve done research on them for the past week,” Downey said.

“They are a good, scrappy group. Their guards are athletic, they like to run.

“If we just do what we do, make a couple of adjustments for them, we’ll be fine.”

Joliet and Malta are back on the court today at noon in loser-out play.
