Class A state girls: Columbia Falls settles for 3rd

GREAT FALLS — Haley Belgarde made two free throws with less than a second left to give Columbia Falls a 54-52 overtime victory over Laurel in the third-place game Saturday at the Class A girls state basketball tournament at Four Seasons Arena.

Belgarde, a senior forward, finished with a game-high 20 points. She was 6 of 10 from the field and 8 of 10 at the line.

Winter Kemppainen followed with 12 points.

Abbie Lohof paced the Locomotives with 17 points. Allie McGrath had 13.

Columbia Falls (22-2)entered the tournament as the top-ranked team and with just one loss on the season.

The Wildkats advanced to the consolation final by downing Frenchtown 60-44 in a morning loser-out contest.

Ciera Finberg led the way with 18 points. Belgarde had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

It was the third meeting of the season for the two Northwestern A rivals. The Wildkats won all three.

Vanessa Stavish had 21 points for Frenchtown.

Frenchtown held a 16-13 edge after eight minutes of play, but it was all Columbia Falls after that.

Brandy Lambourne tallied 25 points to power Havre to the state championship. The Blue Ponies defeated Hamilton 52-43 in the title game.

Taylor Goligoski and Jaylee Albert both scored 13 points for Hamilton.

Hamilton defeated Columbia Falls in semifinal play Friday night, 44-39.
