Elizabeth 'Betty Lou' King Hupp, 85

Betty Lou was born March 15, 1929, in Riverton, Wyo., to Earl and Irene King. They moved to Cut Bank in 1930, where Earl worked in the oil fields and Irene taught school.

Betty met her future husband, Bill Hupp, in first grade. They graduated from Cut Bank High School class of 1947. Betty received a scholarship for valedictorian and attended Montana State College (MSU) where she was very active in the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in interior design. Bill earned a bachelor’s degree in business at MSC before joining the U.S. Air Force. 

Bill and Betty were married Aug. 2,1952. Betty and Bill moved to Boulder, Colo., after his discharge from the U.S. Air Force. Bill earned a master's degree in geology at the University of Colorado. The family moved to Calgary, Alberta, and spent eight years there.

In 1966, the family moved to Billings where Betty was active in the arts. She was a member of Billings Arts Association, Montana Institute of the Arts and Thread Benders. Her creative spirit flowed into unforgettable Halloween costumes, fabulous meals, Christmas cookies, remodeling and interior design with homes accented by their art collection. Betty was best known for her batiks on silk and she also produced paintings, weavings and ceramics. Betty inspired her children to see the world more keenly through her artist's eye. 

In 1986, Betty and Bill moved back to Boulder where she was a member of the Fort Nightly group. Betty and Bill loved to travel. They traveled to many countries and even rafted the Grand Canyon. After Bill's retirement they moved back to Montana and spent many summers at her beloved Whitefish Lake cabin, hosting family and friends. 

Betty passed away March 22, 2014, from natural causes at home in Dillon, with her loving husband by her side. 

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and Bill’s parents; brother-in-law, Gregg Whitney; and many dear friends and family members. 

Betty is survived by her husband of 62 years; her children Megan and Eliott Kuubits, Andrea and Michael Meyer, Tracy and Lenny Hupp-West, Nancy and Brian Schweitzer, Robert and Kathey Hupp, Michael and Patty Hupp; 10 grandchildren; brother, Bill, and Roberta King, of Seattle, sister-in-law, Betty Jo Whitney, of Sacramento, Calif.; beloved nieces and nephews and dear friends. 

A service for family and friends will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, in Dillon at Brundage Funeral Home. Her ashes will be interred at a later date this summer.
