Our vote for mother of the year
Congratulations are in order for Sabrina Wisher, a Kalispell single mother of four who recently was named Montana Mother of the Year by American Mothers. The Montana governor’s office nominated Wisher for the state award, and she’s headed to Colorado next month for the national competition.
If it were up to us she would win the national title, hands down. Wisher has gone the distance in lovingly caring for her 22-year-old daughter, Mikayla, who has suffered from a rare genetic seizure disorder since she was an infant. Don’t forget she’s raised three other well-rounded, accomplished children.
When the community rallied to help Wisher get a specialized bed for Mikayla, Wisher continued to pay that kindness forward by helping others with special needs through a new nonprofit endeavor, Mikayla’s Miracles and Blessings Foundation. She is an inspiration to us all.
Overcoming adversity
Sometimes life deals people tough hands, but Whitefish snowboarder Sean Busby took what he was given — a diagnosis of Type One diabetes at the age of 19 — and he forged ahead with his passion for snowboarding.
Busby was on par with top snowboard racers around the world, but the diagnosis set him back with his health as well as his sponsors. He turned away from racing, and zeroed in on adventure.
Busby has over time been snowboarding in backcountry terrain on seven continents, the first person with diabetes to do so. Having diabetes far away from medical help in itself elevates the degree of his adventures, because there has been no room for error in controlling his insulin.
As just another measure in turning misfortune around, Busby has established a charitable organization, Riding on Insulin, that raises money to give others with diabetes a chance at adventure that Busby has enjoyed. He deserves credit for his inspiring example.
Congratulations, Whitefish!
Speaking of Whitefish, the community received a nice boost for its $19 million high school construction project last week when 12 anonymous donors committed $1 million to provide state-of-the-art performance and technology facilities at the remodeled school.
Writing about about the generosity of Whitefish residents in this space is nothing new. It seems like there are always open wallets to go along with open hearts in Stumptown.
Students, parents and the entire community will benefit from this gift for years to come.
