Plan closes some roads in Helena National Forest

HELENA — The U.S. Forest Service plans to close 157 miles of roads to wheeled motorized use in the Helena National Forest while leaving 289 miles available.

The agency released its final environmental impact statement and a draft record of decision for the non-winter Blackfoot Travel Plan for the Lincoln Ranger District.

The agency’s plan also calls for decommissioning or reclamation of 212 miles of roads.

About 4 miles of new motorized trails would be added.

The plan has non-motorized travelers getting 21 miles of new trails.

The agency says that in developing the plan it tried to create road-free areas where big game can seek refuge during hunting seasons.
