Roundup: Whitefish netters sweep dual with Columbia Falls

WHITEFISH — Whitefish dominated a Northwestern A girls tennis dual with Columbia Falls on Thursday, winning 5-2.

Whitefish won all three doubles matches and picked up wins at Nos. 2-3 singles.

“I thought our doubles teams are gaining a lot of momentum,” Whitefish coach Patrick Dryden said.

“They are peaking at the right time. They were very dominant today.”

Whitefish plays at Polson on Tuesday.

For Columbia Falls, Emily Getts rolled in No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2.

In boys play in Columbia Falls, it was the same team score with Whitefish winning, again.

Columbia Falls won at No. 1 singles and doubles.

“His first win at No. 1 (singles),” Columbia Falls coach Gary Yee said of Gavin Thelen.

“As the match went on, he started believing in himself more and played with more heart.”

Thelen won 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

Mason Gedlaman and Caleb Baumman won their No. 1 doubles match, 6-4, 7-5.

“Close first set, second set they were down 3-0,” Yee said.

“They rallied. That’s staying tough. They focused on what they needed to do.”

Columbia Falls is back on the courts Saturday in Polson versus Stevensville and Polson.

EUREKA — Eureka won three of four singles matches and Troy prevailed in both doubles play as the Class B teams battled to a draw.

“I am really proud of all the girls, all four singles played well,” Eureka coach Kirk Dezinger said.

“Kathryn Stein played very well, winning in two sets, as did Shae’Den Slette. Jocelyn Frasier won her first match and I am really proud of her. Even though Lacey Marquardt lost she played really well.

“Even though both doubles teams lost, they are improving as they have more matches together.”

COLUMBIA FALLS — Emily Getts cruised to another victory in No. 1 singles play for Columbia Falls in a Northwestern A dual loss to Polson.

Getts won 6-1, 6-3 over Shannon Oakley.

“Emily Getts continues her winning ways, losing only to Havre’s No. 1 player in the Cut Bank tournament a week ago,” Columbia Falls coach Jerry Smalley said.

Polson won the remainder of singles play and swept doubles action in Columbia Falls.

“Even though they were defeated, Hailey Sapa (No. 2 singles) and No. 1 doubles Elizabeth Jackson and Baylee Brinton are closer to a significant victory,” Smalley said.

“Molly Schmit is fitting right into the lineup with good play at No. 4 singles.”
