Glacier split a pair of softball games on Saturday, topping Helena High 9-1 in their opener before falling to Capital 4-1 in Western AA action at Kidsports Complex.

The Wolfpack (7-5-1 overall, 6-5 league) got on the board early against Helena (5-8-1, 4-4-1), scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and held a 5-1 lead after the second inning. Glacier senior Hannah Atlee got ahold of a pitch in the fourth inning, sending a two-run shot over the wall while Ali Williams sent out a solo home run in the sixth.

Williams, who also had a double in the contest and batted 3 for 4, allowed just two hits and one run from the circle.

“We started the day out nice,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said. “Multiple girls put the ball in play. It’s always nice to have a couple of home runs to give us a spark and get that offense going.”

As well as the bats were working in the first game, Glacier had trouble finding room in the Helena Capital defense later in the day.

The Bruins (11-2, 7-0) covered the field and held Glacier scoreless until the seventh, but shut down a rally that would have made the game closer.

Katie McHugh and Tacey Howe each went 2 for 3 from the plate for Glacier, picking up all but two hits for the Wolfpack.

McKenzie Johnston had a solo home run for the Bruins.

“Capital is a solid team,” Fors said. “They have solid pitching and their defense doesn’t make mistakes.

“We couldn’t find any holes. They came up with stops when they needed them. But, I was pleased with how hard we hit the ball today.”

Glacier plays Class A powerhouse Frenchtown on Monday. The Broncs have been one of the top teams in the state this season.
