The weather didn’t cooperate and either did the track’s electronic timing device, but there was no dip in quality at the Archie Roe Invitational track meet on Saturday at Legends Stadium.

Whitefish senior Marlow Schulz, who was named the meet’s top female athlete for the third time in four years, nearly overtook her record-setting day from a year ago, despite inclement weather and low temperatures for mid-May. After setting new meet-bests in three events last season, Schulz nearly topped her record mark in the 100-meter dash, but wasn’t awarded a record because of a malfunction with the electronic timing device. The 100 and 800 had to be hand timed, throwing off the official marks.

Schulz still managed to finish in a hand-timed 12.50 seconds, matching her time from last season. She also won the 200 and 400, sweeping the races for the third time at the meet. The only year she didn’t, she was sick.

“I love running this meet,” Schulz said. “The conditions weren’t great in the beginning of the day but I was happy towards the end of the day.”

The sun came out for the 200 and 1,600 relay at the end of the meet.

“I’ve been struggling a little bit with a nagging injury, but when it came to today, I was running,” Schulz said.

“I can take next week off. I love Archie.”

Bigfork’s Makena Morley nearly set a record in the 800, crossing the line in a hand-timed 2:16.2, unofficially a tenth of a second faster than the meet record. Morley, who ran the Bloomsday race in Spokane last week, said she wasn’t feeling at her best despite the winning mark.

“I was hoping to run a little faster,” Morley said. “I ran 2:12 last Tuesday (at the Top 10 in Missoula).

“You always have those days. There’s always a day where everything doesn’t go quite how you want it to go.”

Morley ran just the 800 and 1,600 relay, in hopes to stay fresher towards the end of the season.

“I’ve been trying to focus on the 800 this year,” she said.

“Just to kind of help my speed a little bit because that will help everything.

“I feel really good,” she added.

“Everything feels way better than it normally does.”

Flathead’s Rhiannon Sturgess won both the 100 and 300 hurdles with ease in the absence of Plains’ Hailey Phillips, the state leader in the 300.

Glacier senior Evan Epperly, who was named the top male athlete, had his fastest 100 of the season called back when the clock malfunctioned mid-race, but won the second heat in 11.3 seconds. He also finished second in the 200 and led off the winning Glacier 400 relay.

Flathead’s Jess Beaman won the long and triple jumps.

Flathead won the boys team title and Glacier the girls.
