Glacier boys take 1st; girls 2nd at Northern AA divisional tennis
GREAT FALLS — Glacier’s boys swept all the honors on the final day of play at the Northern AA divisional tennis tournament on Friday.
Hunter Blalack won the singles title, Spencer Johnson and Greg Jones claimed the doubles title and the team captured the divisional crown by a wide margin.
Glacier wound up with 45 points to 25 for runner-up Great Falls High.
Glacier’s Sam Stern and Kyler Harkins helped the scoring by placing third in doubles.
The Glacier girls doubles team of Kali Mathison and Kayla Harwood placed first, helping the team finish second and just four points behind divisional champion C.M. Russell. CMR had a winning score of 38.
Glacier’s Berta Jover-Llorens and Maya Buckingham placed fourth in doubles.
Flathead’s Glenn Strickler finished fourth in singles to qualify for state. The Braves were fourth, but only missed out on a tie for second place by five points.
The Flathead girls were a distant fourth. The Bravettes did not qualify anyone for state.
The top four individuals and doubles teams advance to the Class AA state tournament May 23-24 in Bozeman
Glacier will have five boys and four girls at state.
“Not too bad,” Glacier coach Josh Munro said.
“We had a chance for a lot more (to qualify) the way we were set up after yesterday, but we had some tough matches.
“All in all, pretty good,” he added.
“We were in every match and didn’t get blown out anywhere. It was a good day oveverall. It was close on the girls and came down to some crucial semifinal (matches).
