Making air show fly takes volunteers

It takes a lot of people to make an air show happen. The volunteer corps needed for the Mountain Madness Air Show Aug. 30-31 featuring the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds is 1,000 people willing to do what it takes to make the show flow.

Earlier this week air-show organizers said they’re at the halfway mark, with 500 people recruited. They’re still looking for people to take tickets, oversee parking and operate ice-cream carts, among other jobs.

While giving back to the community, volunteers also earn a portion of parking or concession commissions, and that money will be donated to help a charity of the volunteer’s choice. It’s a great opportunity to be part of one of the biggest events in the Flathead this summer.

If you can help, visit www.montanaairshow.com or call the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce at 758-2803.

Congratulations to FHS

Flathead Valley’s high schools are full of success stories. We’ll feature some of them in the next week or two as we approach graduation, but in the meantime we’d like to toot the horn for the Flathead High School band.

Flathead band director Allen Slater works tirelessly to provide a solid musical education for his students, and this month Slater got word that the band had been won a prestigious national honor.

The National Band Association awarded its Division of Excellence Blue Ribbon Award to the Flathead High School band. The school was one of only eight finalists, and the only band from the Northwestern Division to make the grade.

As parents and fans already know, the FHS band can hold its own with the best of them. Now the rest of the country knows, too.

Take care this weekend

It’s Memorial Day weekend, a time for campouts and picnics and, of course, remembering those who have died in service to their country.

As some of us head to the woods for the three-day weekend (and the weather actually may not be its usual downpour this year), we all should remember that winter is stubbornly lingering in the mountains.

Rivers and streams are running high and may approach flood stage this weekend, many trails are still blocked by snow and in some places avalanches are still a danger.

In short, enjoy the holiday weekend, but be careful out there. And don’t forget to drive cautiously on your way to your destination, because some people won’t.
