Glacier’s Ogden breaks meet record in javelin

With one last week to prove themselves before state, a trio of local boys put up big marks on the opening day of the Western AA divisional track meet on Friday at Legends Stadium.

Glacier’s Todd Ogden, who didn’t start his season until a few weeks ago, made a huge impact on his first javelin throw of the day. Despite a labyrinth of tape on his throwing shoulder, the mending of a football injury from the fall, Ogden uncorked a throw of 215 feet, a school and divisional meet record that counted as the second-longest throw in state history and the fourth-longest in the country this season.

“Right when I threw it, I knew it was an explosive throw,” Ogden said. “I felt it transfer up my body. Right away I knew it was a good one. I tried playing it off pretty cool, but it felt good.”

Ogden, a three-time Class AA state champion, had yet to throw farther than 183-3 this season while working his way back into form. His throw Friday topped the meet record he set last season by 13 1/2 feet.

“For the most part, it was a lot of just catching up with my arm,” Ogden said. “My arm was getting ahead of everything else. Just getting the footwork down really helped out.”

Just minutes later inside the stadium, Glacier teammate Lonnie Sherman cleared 15 feet in the pole vault for the second time this season. Instead of shooting for a meet record at just two inches higher, Sherman aimed for 15-6, but missed on each of his three tries.

At the same time, in the high jump, Flathead’s Matt Quist set a personal best by soaring over 6-9, and just missed in three attempts at 6-11, half an inch above the school record.

“My heel’s been giving me some issues,” Quist said. “I bruised it a couple weeks ago at the Libby meet. I think I’ll be fine.

“Every meet I try to (set a personal best). The dream is to always go higher. I think 6-11 is still in the future for me.”

Each of the three enter the state competition next weekend with the top marks in the state this season, setting the tone for a hot day on the track.

The Glacier and Flathead boys teams enter the final day of competition two points apart with eight events still to be decided, trailing Helena High at the top.

Flathead’s Rhiannon Sturgess continued her impressive run in the hurdles this season, winning the 300-meter hurdles in 46.09 seconds.

Keyawna Larson kept up Glacier’s dominance in javelin with a win on the girls side, throwing 133-5, six feet farther than the rest of the field.

The girls all trail Big Sky by a hefty margin in the team score with nine events still to be determined.

The meet concludes today, with field events scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and track events at 11:30.

The day is highlighted by the finals of the sprints, with a handful of local speedsters set to contend, and triple jump and discus in the field. The girls will also hold their high jump, starting the bar at 4-7.
