AA State Softball: Glacier out in 2 in AA play

GREAT FALLS — The Glacier Wolfpack stumbled twice and were eliminated from the 2014 State Class AA Softball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Multi-Sports Complex.

Glacier was aggressive in its opening-round matchup, a 13-6 loss to favorite C.M. Russell. The Wolfpack opened with four runs in the top of the first inning.

The Rustlers, however, responded with five runs in the bottom half of that inning.

Glacier would tack on two more runs, including one more in the seventh, but two three-run innings by CMR put the contest away.

Kayla Russell led the Wolfpack with a 2 for 4 effort, hitting two doubles and an RBI in the game.

Ali Williams, Kayleena Ikeda and Anna Jenks all had one hit and one RBI.

The Rustlers’ McCall Enott went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Madi Mahoney hit the game’s only home run while driving in three runs.

The Wolfpack, facing elimination, took on the Great Falls in the second game of the day.

Glacier trailed 3-1 after scoring its first run in the top of the fourth inning, but the Bison diminished any momentum the Wolfpack found with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and rode ace Marina LaRoque’s arm to a 10-2 victory.

Ikeda and Tacey Howe each had RBIs for the Wolfpack, who were out-hit 13 to 4.

Great Falls was led by Caitlyn Konesky, who went 4 for 4, and Bailey Freda, who tallied two RBIs on as many hits.

The semifinals will feature C.M. Russell, who defeated Helena Capital 12-1 in five innings, and Missoula Big Sky, who shut out Billings Skyview 7-0.
